Présentation / Introduction

Mediator is a UK based photographer working mainly in portraiture and photojournalism. The granddaughter of renowned Russian concert pianist Iso Elinson she grew up in an artistic family with a very strong feeling of being an outsider. With a background education in Photography she then went on to study a BA ( Hons ) in Cinema and Philosophy at University. Influenced by the stark visual imagery of Lisette Model, WeeGee and Robert Capa, the study of the history of photography left its mark on her visual memories. Having a life that has covered being a Model, musician, extreme blood and ritual performer, underground art and oddities collector, and also a Reverend for the cult Church of the Subgenius.

A « club kid « freak in the 90’s and beyond who was regularly to be found at a mixture of fetish, high fashion and queer clubs in cities from London to Paris, NYC, LA and beyond. Existing in various disguises and outfits at infamous clubs such as Torture Garden, Submission, Kashpoint, Golf Sale, Boombox, Ponystep, Mother Bar ( NYC ), The Cock ( London ), Miss Kitty’s Parlour ( LA ), Club Motherfucker ( NYC ), and also being one of the main faces of the infamous seminal London electroclash club Nag Nag Nag. Often photographed in clubs and at shows with those images and her own self portrait photographs appearing in a range of magazines such as Skin Two, Bizarre, Heavy Rock Sound, Boyz, Girls and Corpses, and Hip Hop Connection.

She also co-created S.E.C.T with the visual artist Espira. Using a system of stickers, leaflets, graffiti, gnostic ritual performances and general depravity, S.E.C.T was born out a passion for the absurd and a love of transgression in all its forms.

« A force de voir des corps nus, nous ne pouvons plus voir la nudité comme évènement : L’événement n’est désormais plus que cette hypervisibilité même (…). ». Méhdi Belhaj Kacem, Society.

Redistribuant avec malice les pôles actif/passif habituellement constitutifs de la différence homme/femme, Mediator nous invite à revenir sur l’idée – bien souvent naïve et simpliste – que nous nous faisons de nos identités sexuelles. Telle l’héroïne cannibale jouée par Béatrice Dalle dans le film Troubles everyday de Claire Denis, son œuvre est une méditation visuelle sur le destin, ô combien versatile, de nos pulsions.

Entre Eros et Thanatos, Mediator a choisi de ne pas choisir ; ou plutôt, de souligner le rapport dialectique qui unifie ces deux notions. Que ce soit dans sa série « Bloody messy girls », ou bien encore de celle intitulée « My tears fall upon the scar across my throat », une même ambiguïté parcours ces images, faisant du corps de la femme un objet de fixation soumis à d’incessants retournements.

Tantôt fragile et renfermée, mais le plus souvent agressive et mutilée, l’image de la femme retrouve ici sa portée transgressive et par là même, la puissance érotique de son sexe. A l’instar des ménades dévorant, dans un accès de folie, le corps de leur amant, les œuvres de Médiator renouent avec les délires orgiaques des fidèles de Dionysos. Et si la pornographie était l’ennemi juré de l’érotisme ; et les catégories inconscientes qui définissent ses « genres », les derniers symptômes de nos désirs refoulés ?
